Setting Up a Discord Server from Scratch: Channels, Roles and Welcome
An organized server starts with three steps: clear channel categories, roles with specific permissions, and a welcome that shows new members where to go. Then comes the visual identity that makes it look professional.
1. Categories and channels

Start with a few channels and add more as needed. A server crowded with empty channels looks dead.
2. Roles and permissions
- Create clear roles: admins, moderators, members, bots.
- Give each role the fewest permissions it needs, and grant Administrator only to people you fully trust.
- Set channel permissions on the category, so every channel under it follows automatically.
- Make the rules and announcements channels read-only for @everyone.
3. Welcome and rules
Enable Community features in server settings to get a welcome screen and rules screening before members can post. Put an image carrying the server's identity in the welcome channel, and short, clear points in the rules channel.
4. Visual identity
