How to Add an Alert in OBS, Step by Step

To add an alert in OBS, upload the alert file (a WEBM with a transparent background) to the alert tool you use, such as Streamlabs or StreamElements, then add that tool's alert link to OBS as a Browser Source at 1920×1080. The alert then plays over your stream automatically on every donation, with nothing for you to do live.

Before you start

  • The alert file as a WEBM with a transparent background, the format Flix Store alerts are delivered in.
  • OBS Studio installed.
  • An account with an alert tool that supports the platform you stream on.

Why a transparent WEBM?

A regular video file (MP4) has no transparency, so a black box shows around the alert and covers your stream. A transparent WEBM shows only the design, so the alert looks like part of the scene.

Method 1: through your alert tool (for live streams)

  1. Open your alert tool's dashboard and go to the Alert Box settings.
  2. Pick the alert type, such as donations, and upload the WEBM in place of the default image or video.
  3. Set the alert duration to match the alert's length, or slightly longer, so it never cuts off early.
  4. Copy the Alert Box link (Widget URL). It is private: never share it or show it on stream.
  5. In OBS: Sources → + → Browser, paste the link, and set width 1920 and height 1080.
  6. Press Test Alert in the tool's dashboard and check the alert appears in OBS.

Method 2: as a Media Source (for testing)

In OBS: Sources → + → Media Source, then choose the WEBM file. This isn't tied to real donations, but it's handy for previewing the alert over your scene before going live, or for playing it by hand with a hotkey.

Common problems and fixes

  • A black box around the alert: the file isn't a transparent WEBM, or it was converted. Use the original file as delivered.
  • The alert doesn't show: make sure the Browser Source sits above your camera and game sources in the list, and that the whole link was pasted.
  • No sound: in the Browser Source properties, turn on Control audio via OBS, then set the level in the audio mixer.
  • The alert is cut off or too small: make the source the same size as your scene (1920×1080), then press Ctrl+F to fit it to the screen.

Does this work with Streamlabs Desktop? Yes. Streamlabs Desktop is built on OBS, and you add the alert through its Alert Box widget directly.

Can I use more than one alert? Yes. Each alert type takes its own file, and some tools let you play a different alert depending on the donation amount.
